Sunday School Class from Kenwood Baptist Church Celebrates 76 Years

The Homebuilders in 2016

Golden Friends: those are the ones you have had for more than 50 years. While it is rare to have a friend that long, Kenwood Baptist has had members of the same Sunday School class, the Homebuilders, who have remained friends and been committed to each other as couples and families for over seven decades.

The Homebuilders began meeting at Kenwood Baptist when it was Evanston Baptist in 1946. At the time, the wars had just ended, and the Greatest Generation was just getting their families started. One Sunday morning, led by Pastor Paul Mathews, a group of eight unmarried individuals began meeting. They have seen many changes including relocating their church from Evanston to Kenwood in the 1960s. Over the years, this group met weekly and at one point, grew to over 150 members. As they all lived life together, they challenged each other on how to raise children, how to buy homes, grow careers, and mostly, how best to serve God and age gracefully as Christians. Throughout their active years, they shared many meals, vacationed together, supported countless ministries, and mentored many younger men and women.  They have been the backbone of their church.

This year, they will be celebrating their 76th anniversary. Even though many of them are no longer with us and it is difficult for many of their members to meet in person, they still meet weekly at their home church. They still support each other and serve as an inspiration on how to live a great life.
