Building a Partnership With
First Baptist Church Cap-Haitien and
The Christian University of Haiti

For the past 25 years, Pastor Vic Gordon has been supporting Haitian Christians through mission work in the city of Cap Haitien in Northern Haiti.  Vic became involved with Haiti through Jospeh Voltaire, the Haitian Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Cap Haitien. Vic met Joseph when he had Joseph in a Doctorate of Ministry class he was teaching at Northern Seminary.  Vic’s ties and service to Haiti have grown increasingly over the past 25 years through his relationship with Pastor Joseph and others at First Baptist Church, Cap Haitien.

First Baptist Church in Cap Haitien was founded in 1823 by American Baptist missionaries and now has a membership of 5,000 people.  In 1947, the missionaries opened the Haitian Baptist Seminary to train local Pastors.  This school has grown in size and scope and is now the called The Christian University of Northern Haiti. As well as being the Pastor of First Baptist Church Cap Haitien, Joseph is a professor at the university. For the past twenty years, Pastor Vic has traveled yearly to Haiti to teach courses at the university. The church and the university are both run by Haitians and are some of the most respected institutions in the country. This past summer, Pastor Vic was appointed by American Baptist International Ministries to be their Special Representative to Haiti for Pastoral Education and Development.

Pastor Vic and mission teams from each of his past churches have made many trips to Haiti to support the Christians there.  This support is vital, not only for spiritual encouragement, but also for help with their basic needs.  Haiti is one of poorest countries in the Western hemisphere: about 80% of the residents live in poverty. Haiti is also one of the most densely populated and least developed countries in the western hemisphere.  The population is currently 8,288,000, with 2 million of those living in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
